Fireworks Safety Guidelines
A few basics for a safer, happier celebration.
Do
- Burst crackers only in open, well-ventilated outdoor spaces, away from buildings, dry leaves, and anything flammable.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby before you begin.
- Wear cotton clothing rather than synthetic fabrics, which catch fire more easily.
- Light one cracker at a time, at arm's length, and step back immediately after lighting it.
- Keep young children supervised by an adult at all times — let adults handle the lighting.
- Store unused crackers in a cool, dry place, away from any flame or heat source.
Don't
- Don't hold a lit cracker in your hand.
- Don't try to relight a cracker that hasn't fully burst — dispose of it safely instead.
- Don't burst fireworks indoors, in crowded areas, or near parked vehicles.
- Don't consume alcohol before or while handling fireworks.
- Don't store crackers near open flames, stoves, or in direct sunlight.
